    JA Perspective—Then and Now

Rachana Rao is a JA alumna and worked alongside JA staff this summer as an intern. Here, she shares her reflections on the experience:

When I first visited Junior Achievement, I was 10 years old, nervous, but determined and excited for the day ahead of me. I was on a field trip to JA BizTown®, where I would be working in the radio station for a day, as an assistant to the DJ. It was a memorable experience, not only because of the fun I had choosing songs or working "like an adult," but because it gave me confidence in my abilities and in myself.

When I came back this summer, I was a decade older, but just as nervous, determined, and excited for the day ahead of me. This time, I walked into the office as an intern.

I came into this internship wanting to learn more about non-profits. Junior Achievement was a perfect fit, as I had first-hand experience of its programs as a young student and could really understand the impact of the organization. I've learned a lot, but here are some of my highlights from the experience:

    1. The misconceptions I had about non-profits have been shattered. I thought, like many other people do, that because a business is not-for-profit, it must also not be like a traditional business. I thought there would be no emphasis on revenue, or traditional workdays and hours. Was I wrong! A non-profit works just like any other business model. The only difference is what they're working toward.

    2. Everyone works together. I don't think I could have found any other internship where the people would be this welcoming. From the very first day, everyone in the office was incredibly helpful. I never felt like I couldn't ask a question when I needed help (the printers are not my friends!) and I felt like everyone wanted me to succeed.

    3. I think my favorite thing about JA is that it's a sustainable non-profit. When I say sustainable, I mean that Junior Achievement imparts kids with more than just something that lasts for a day. JA is less about fixing the problem of a moment and more about teaching students to own their own financial success, and that's invaluable. Every lesson they're learning is preparing them for the real world. Every student that leaves JA, leaves with knowledge and confidence, ready to conquer their dreams.

I wanted to learn what makes a non-profit successful, and I'm walking away from this internship with a deeper understanding of a great non-profit business model.

My internship was an incredible opportunity for me and I'm so thankful to all the wonderful and supportive people I've met. I had no idea what to expect of this internship, but much like my job at JA BizTown 10 years ago, I've found myself leaving with some newfound confidence and knowledge, ready to tackle my dreams.

    JA Changed Leonel's Life

During his freshman year at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, Texas, Leonel Martinez was on his way to being another statistic. "I just wasn't that into high school. I was just going with the flow, and whatever happened at the time, happened." Despite boyhood dreams of becoming an astronaut or space engineer, Leonel didn't really know what he wanted out of life.

Fortunately, Leonel's outlook changed in his sophomore year when he participated in a JA Job Shadowin partnership with AT&T's Aspire program. The kindness and sincerity of the mentors impacted Leonel deeply.

He said: "It allowed me to believe more in myself and feel like I can do more than just be a student or just be a worker. I can actually be someone in life. Ever since the JA Job Shadow, I've had goals in life."

Now, Leonel is 19-years-old and studying Computer Science at University of Texas in Arlington. Inspired by the mentors he met at AT&T, his dream is to work in the technology field. Through the generosity of JA's supporters, Leonel had the opportunity to spend time with mentors who transformed his life.

"Because of JA, all I see is nothing but good things to come. It showed me that anything is possible in life."

    Morgan Sweeney

    JA Helps Students Reach Goals

For Morgan Sweeney, a recent graduate of Mankato East High School in Mankato, the JA Company Program® she participated in last year taught her a skill she feels will serve her well for the rest of her life: how to solicit cooperation in pursuit of a goal.

Sweeney, who recently turned 19, already had some past experience negotiating as part of a group. She is the youngest of triplet sisters as well as an older sister and brother, making her "the youngest of the youngest" in her family, she says with a chuckle.

Sweeney served as the president of her JA Company Program start-up, Xcaliber, initiated by 13 Mankato East students ranging in age from freshmen to seniors.

As with other JA Company Program efforts, Sweeney and her teammates first spent time devising their business idea—manufacturing and selling custom cell phone covers—and then sought outside investors to fund the company. "We were trying to find people to invest and Taylor Corporation heard about us and decided that they would support us," Sweeney says. (Taylor Corp., founded by noted entrepreneur and businessman Glen Taylor, is a North Mankato-based printing and communications company with more than 9,000 employees and 80 subsidiaries. It has been a generous supporter and source of volunteers for a number of JA programs.)

"[Taylor Corp.] thought the idea of high school kids starting a business and being real entrepreneurs was really cool and they wanted to help us out," Sweeney says about the partnership with Taylor Corp. "They ultimately manufactured our cases for us, and they took a percentage of the profit from each case in return. We really learned a lot from them about how to sell and promote our business, price our products, and everything. They taught us so much about the business aspects of running a company."

One particular business basic Sweeney's team discovered was that to sell their products, ranging in price from $30 to $75, they first had to find the right market. "We had kind of a problem initially figuring out who to sell to," Sweeney says. "We originally wanted to sell to teenagers but in the first two weeks, we made only six sales. We met to talk about it and realized that we kept getting the same answer: ‘I can't afford it.' Instead, we started talking to our parents and their coworkers, our grandparents, and older people and that got us a lot further."

Sweeney and her team utilized social media, including Facebook and Twitter, and a personalized website through which interested customers could learn more about the student company. "We put together a bio about ourselves that said we were a group of local students who wanted to start our own business and become entrepreneurs," Sweeney explains.

Sweeney's taste of entrepreneurship seems to have whetted her appetite for some day owning her own business. She plans to attend South Central Community College this spring and then transfer to Minnesota State University-Mankato to pursue nursing. "My dad owns a business doing adult foster care, so I've been around the health field my whole life," Sweeney says. "I've realized that business is really cool and I'm thinking that with nursing, I might be able to do that and own a business."

If Sweeney does start her own business, the central premise she learned from her student-run company will be beneficial: "I really learned a lot about the importance of cooperation," Sweeney says. "You really learn that you do always have to work with people and not argue. Probably the most valuable thing I learned was the importance of partnership and everyone working together. It was a lot of fun."

Citi Foundation's Push Toward the Future

Through the support of the Citi Foundation, Junior Achievement USA (JA) created JA My Way™, an online, interactive one-stop shop for teens to help them better understand how to manage money, choose a career, and start a business. Launched in July 2015, JA My Way is a free, online experience that uses personality tests, interactive games, assessment tools, and educational resources to provide teens with helpful information in a fun and engaging way. Through its various sections, the site helps teens explore opportunities in 16 career clusters, learn what it takes to pay for college, refine their resume creation and job hunting skills, and delve into the steps necessary to become a successful entrepreneur.

The collaboration between JA and the Citi Foundation has expanded into 2016 with another generous grant of $250,000. This two-year grant supports virtual and in-person Program and Change Management Training supporting JA's adoption of blended learning. These new trainings promote best practices and use the most current "Train the Trainer" models. During this grant period, JA is rolling out its new Learning Platform. The Citi Foundation's support is ensuring that JA associates across the country are able to take full advantage of this new and exciting education delivery model.

Capital One Upgrades JA Finance Park® Experience for the Enrichment of America's Youth

Junior Achievement USA and Capital One continue their collaboration to enrich America's youth. Over the last decade, Capital One has supported Junior Achievement with more than $19 million in contributions to enhance the JA Finance Park Mobile experience.

The JA Finance Park program is an innovative financial literacy simulation that introduces young people to personal financial planning and career exploration. It helps students build a foundation upon which they can make intelligent financial decisions that last a lifetime, including decisions related to income, expenses, savings, and credit. It culminates a hands-on budgeting simulation that is implemented either at a JA Finance Park facility, mobile unit, or virtual site. "I teach this program because I truly believe in the message it sends to my students. A lesson that is useful for students to use in their lives right now to keep them focused and driven as they enter the next chapter of their lives," said one JA Area Educator.

In 2014, Capital One generously gifted the technological innovation of paperless JA Finance Park experiences in several JA markets by providing tablets for students. This paperless implementation allows for a deeper volunteer/student engagement by allowing students to focus on how to make the best budgetary and financially sound decisions as opposed to spending valuable simulation time struggling with math equations.

Capital One's most recent investment resulted in a "facelift" for JA Finance Park Mobile Units. The upgrades allowed for adjustments to be made to Mobile Units in order to support optimal experiences for students, such as: providing more room on table tops for increased collaboration and adding additional stations to decrease the wait times during the simulations for students.

Beyond these amazing contributions that impact the lives of many students, Capital One shines in other avenues when it comes to their ongoing support of JA. As of 2015, there were 15 local Capital One board members and the company has received seven President's Volunteer Service Awards in the years 2008-2015. This award is issued on behalf of the White House and honors individuals, families, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period or throughout their lifetime. This award and board involvement showcases Capital One's deep commitment to employee engagement with JA students.

More than 440,000 students have experienced the significant lessons in JA Finance Park as a direct result of the Capital One local program implementation funding with Junior Achievement USA since the 2006 inception. As one JA volunteer put it, "These life lessons are crucial for our youth. Capital One/JA Finance Park really exposes these kids to the financial responsibilities that adults face every day. What a great experience for both the kids and volunteers."

CrossKnowledge Provides Historic Contribution to Junior Achievement USA

This year marks a huge turning point for Junior Achievement USA as it works to remain innovative and relevant in modern times. A new partnership with CrossKnowledge–the distance learning brand of Wiley, Inc.– will provide thousands of students and educators with the latest digital learning solutions. Beginning in 2016, this in-kind donation from the CrossKnowledge Foundation will provide JA with the CrossKnowledge Learning Platform free of charge for five years. Valued in the millions of dollars, this donation is one of the largest of its kind in the history of JA. The Learning Platform allows students, educators, and JA's network of classroom volunteers to quickly and easily access JA curriculum with a device and an Internet connection. Its blended-learning model supports in-person delivery of curriculum content to students in the classroom, helping them prepare for a successful career after graduation. Through this historic collaboration, JA is offering a variety of content through the Learning Platform. Early feedback has been very positive:

"I was so impressed by the material; the presentation projected at the front of the classroom kept the students more engaged and attentive than the paper kits. My students are very used to learning through computers and/or a digital presentation. I feel that this new adaptation of JA It's My Future® is more relevant to the way the students learn now." –Mrs. Jordan Sitzes, Teacher, Madison Middle School, who had six classes involved with the first day of JA It's My Future – Blended program

"The new digital format is much more interactive. Just seeing the kids and how they pay attention to it and move through it so much easier than trying to do so with the paper kit that we had before. It really just made it more enjoyable, I think, overall. It was for me, and I think it was for the students as well." –Josh Greer, Board Member and volunteer, Junior Achievement of Abilene

"CrossKnowledge and its parent company, Wiley, have made a significant gift that will eventually change the lives of millions. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity and dedication to our mission of inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in the global economy," said Jack E Kosakowski, President and CEO, Junior Achievement USA

Share the American Dream Campaign Keeps Junior Achievement Relevant Long Term

Jim Gallogly, retired CEO of LyondellBasell and current Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas (Houston) Board Member, has been committed to Junior Achievement (JA) for as long as he can remember. Through the years, Jim has become more and more involved, as he is a firm believer that "a good education is about as fundamental a thing as there is." It wasn't long ago that Jim's granddaughter and her use of technology inspired him to go one step further and support JA's Share the American Dream Campaign, which is helping to transform the organization's delivery of programs through the use of blended learning.

Why JA?

Junior Achievement USA

Why JA?

At JA, we strive to help young people move from a sense of "I Can't" to "I Can" by fostering self-belief and a sense of purpose necessary to improve their circumstances. This is accomplished by using a scientifically proven model to influence knowledge and attitudes in ways that increase self-efficacy. JA does this by utilizing volunteer role models and proven programs to inspire and prepare young people to succeed through greater comprehension of how money, careers, and business ownership works. The video below further illustrates this approach:

Proof of Impact

JA recently completed an extensive survey of JA Alumni. These former students credit JA for positively impacting their lives. The survey found that when compared to the general population, JA Alumni are more likely to have graduated high school and college, earn more, and are more inclined to have started a business. Founding Member

The U.S. President's

Volunteer Service Award

The U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award is a presidential recognition program created in 2003 by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation for individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service. In 2006, Junior Achievement became an official certifying organization for this award because of its national reach and standing. This status allows JA to bestow this honor to corporations with a U.S. presence that provide volunteers to teach JA programs anywhere in the world.
