    Joseph Fortuno

JA Student Becomes the CEO of His Future

Prior to his involvement with Junior Achievement, Joseph Fortuno was drifting through his time at Hercules High School in northern California with a 2.0 GPA, not seeing a purpose to his education. To his surprise, during his junior year, Joseph suddenly became homeless, sleeping on his friends' couches. More than ever, he needed the support of instructors and mentors to help him successfully complete his education and realize his full potential.

Joseph's personal and academic transformation began with Hercules High's Academy of Hospitality and International Tourism instructor, Chef Lourdes Sampayo. Chef Sampayo introduced Joseph to the JA Company Program®, which changed Joseph's life. In JA Company Program, high school students create and operate their own business venture under the mentorship of a volunteer from the local business community. Joseph became part of a JA Company called Herban Movement.

As part of its hospitality industry focus, Herban Movement created a cookbook-encyclopedia hybrid and a multipurpose bag that replaced now-illegal (in California) plastic grocery bags. As the company grew and the first edition of its cookbook sold out, its leaders realized that they had an obligation to increase Herban Movement's social responsibility. The company's officers and employees decided that 40 percent of its profits would be donated to charity.

Demonstrating its success, Herban Movement was selected to compete at Junior Achievement USA's 2015 National Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., and was recognized with a national award for social innovation.

Joseph was recently interviewed on PBS' American Graduate Day broadcast by ABC Nightline anchor and fellow Junior Achievement alumna Juju Chang. Now attending Cogswell College in San Jose, Joseph said, "I am excited to represent Junior Achievement and what they have helped me build for the last two years. I hope that this opportunity will inspire others in the way that Junior Achievement inspired me to create a successful future."

    Rania Gadnis

Teen JA Alumna Plans to Help Change the World

When soft-spoken 14-year-old Rania Gadnis tells you she plans to be a neurosurgeon someday and also wants to create a group of international schools for poor women, you find yourself nodding and thinking, "I can see that happening."

Rania's global perspective was nurtured by her parents, who are from India and Colombia. The family has worked on a variety of philanthropic and business-related efforts around the world. These experiences inspired Rania to create a charitable organization during her attendance at JA BizTown® Summer Camp, which she has attended twice.

"My mom was looking for summer camps and came across JA BizTown," Rania says. "I thought it would be cool to learn how to run a business. My dream when I grow up is to create a school for girls in poor countries where they don't have schools, and also to have a clinic with it. Malala [Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate] is one of my idols."

At JA BizTown, the volunteers helped Rania work through the details and suggested that she might want to form a nonprofit organization—a first for JA BizTown—and now a permanent part of the business simulation lab. Rania convinced other student-run businesses to contribute to her venture.

Rania said the inspiration for her JA BizTown efforts came from her father, a business consultant. "My dad is doing a project in the Congo which also has a clinic attached to it," Rania said. "My dad is setting it up for them and after a few years, they're going to run it by themselves and create their own economy where they don't have one now."

Rania believes that giving to others should be a natural part of life, and she's pleased that JA BizTown helped her share that message with others. "[JA BizTown] is really a good place because you learn about a lot of skills that you're going to use in life," Rania says. "But it's also really fun! You don't even realize that you're learning something."

    Alden Brinkley

JA Alumnus Pays Forward Life-Changing Lessons

JA alumni often point to their JA experiences as turning points in their lives, but not many can tap into learning they have gained from 11 years of JA programs as a student and volunteer. Alden Brinkley participated in JA from second grade through high school. He has been a student in JA programs taught by his parents and has volunteered to teach JA programs at his alma mater, Columbia, South Carolina's Ballentine Elementary School.

Alden points to JA as a catalyst for helping him create a plan for his future. In his case, he wants to become a doctor and own his own practice. As a student participating in JA Titan®, Alden was the CEO of his virtual company and learned how to adapt to quickly changing business conditions. During his volunteer experience teaching JA Our Community®, he helped Ballentine's second-graders learn how different jobs make communities successful.

"Junior Achievement taught me how to be a leader, while also instilling the importance of listening to others' opinions," Alden said. "I have also learned about entrepreneurship and what it means to have the freedom to run a business."

Alden is now a college freshman at The Citadel, majoring in Biology, on the path to achieving his dream of a career in medicine.

  • JA Global Marketplace

HSBC – North America Helps Students Join the JA Global Marketplace®

The best collaborations start with a strong foundation—and the relationships between JA and its partners are no exception. In 1942, HSBC Bank USA, N.A. (HSBC) provided a $25 donation to JA of Chicago, and over the last 73 years, the relationship has blossomed into a multi-million-dollar partnership. Since 1996, HSBC has been providing JA Areas in the United States with volunteer and monetary support through its Volunteer Alliance, helping expand student access to Junior Achievement.

Building on this rich history, we are excited to announce the next phase of JA's and HSBC's collaboration. Junior Achievement USA is pleased to welcome HSBC as the new sponsor of JA Global Marketplace. The $2 million investment will support the re-creation of JA Global Marketplace to make the student experience more contemporary, providing young people with real-world experiences that duplicate the critical role they play in the global economy. Additionally, the HSBC gift will support select JA markets in bringing JA Global Marketplace to students in those communities.

Loren Klug, JA USA board member and HSBC USA Senior Executive Vice President, said, "HSBC's and JA's relationship has been enduring and successful because both organizations understand—and are prepared to help solve—the challenges facing today's youth as they prepare for the 'real world.'"

    JA PERSONAL FINANCE®
    DRIVES TEENS TO A FUN,
    BLENDED-LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Junior Achievement USA and American Honda Finance Corporation (AHFC) have collaborated to bring the world of responsible money management to teens in a fun and engaging way. Thanks to a $1.8 million sponsorship from AHFC, JA has redeveloped its JA Personal Finance program, which will help nearly half-a-million U.S. teens become more financially literate over the next four years.

Additionally, JA and AHFC created a new online interactive quiz, www.financialtestdrive.org, to help teens learn about the financial responsibilities associated with vehicle ownership.

JA Personal Finance helps high school students better understand and apply important financial concepts, such as the need to budget, invest and save; as well as the proper use of credit. JA Personal Finance now lives within JA's Learning Management System, using a blended-learning experience to harness the expertise of JA volunteers both in-classroom and using technology.

"Junior Achievement's core values align very well with our own core values as a corporation—to enrich the social, economic and educational well-being of communities and society," explains David W. Paul, senior vice president, AHFC. "Buying a car is one of the first major financial decisions most of us make. We want to help the next generation become ready for the responsibilities of financing a car as well as establishing a firm financial foundation."

See what teens and parents know about owning a car!

    NATIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

    JA Convenes Top
    Teen Entrepreneurs
    in Nation's Capital

Junior Achievement's National Student Leadership Summit (NSLS) is an annual competition that celebrates JA teen entrepreneurs' business skills, creativity, and innovation. This engaging event convenes 15 JA Company Program® start-ups in our nation's capital for three days of high-impact JA experiences, culminating in a gala awards dinner.

Currently reaching more than 14,000 U.S. high school students who created nearly 700 start-up ventures, JA Company Program teens create and market a real enterprise—a product or service which fills an unmet consumer need—under the guidance of a volunteer from the local business community.

This pinnacle event assesses student companies on the following: business performance; company commercial; team presentation to a panel of business leaders; team members' personal and professional development; and, the company's performance at an Entrepreneurship Expo on Capitol Hill. JA students participate in relevant activities that engaged them with leading business professionals, Members of Congress, and the best of Washington D.C.'s historic tourist attractions.

This year, the 15 JA student teams were comprised of 67 teen entrepreneurs and represented 14 different Junior Achievement operations from across the United States. The NSLS winners were:
JA Company of the Year, powered by The Hartford, were as follows:

    • First Place: CCA Today from JA of San Diego County
    • Second Place: YOUnique Frames from JA of Chicago
    • Third place: Timeless Creations from JA of East Central Ohio (Canton, OH)

FedEx Access Award: uFusion from JA of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA)

Microsoft Social Innovation Award: Herban Movement from JA of Northern California (San Francisco, CA)

NYSE Best Financial Performance Award: Mustang Mail from JA of the Upper Midwest (Minneapolis, MN)

Decrease in year-over-year instructional contact hours reflects wider implementation of an 18-contact-hour model for JA Finance Park® and JA BizTown® in response to educators' requests for more flexibility in the delivery model for these programs. Prior to the 2014-15 school year, a 25-contact-hour and 26-contact-hour model (respectively) were the only implementation options for these two programs.

Founding Member

The U.S. President's

Volunteer Service Award

The U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award is a presidential recognition program created in 2003 by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation for individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service. In 2006, Junior Achievement became an official certifying organization for this award because of its national reach and standing. This status allows JA to bestow this honor to corporations with a U.S. presence that provide volunteers to teach JA programs anywhere in the world.
